Read a Letter
Some things need to be said. That doesn’t mean they need to be sent.
Maybe it’s someone you loved. Someone you lost. Someone you left. Someone who left you.
Maybe you’re angry. Maybe you miss them. Maybe you’ve rehearsed the same conversation in your head 400 times and somehow they still haven’t gotten the memo.
That’s what the Letters are for.
They’re the words we needed to say, even if the person they were meant for never reads them.
Some are mine. Some come from members of the IHYH community. Some are sad. Some are angry. Some are loving. Some are complicated enough to be all three.
There doesn’t have to be a lesson at the end.
Sometimes you just need somewhere to put the words.
Want to Write One?
Write what you need to write.
You don’t have to make it beautiful. You don’t have to forgive anyone. You don’t have to find closure. And you definitely don’t have to send it.
Keep it for yourself, or if you want to share it, submit it to I Hope You’re Happy. Your letter may become part of this collection for someone else to stumble across and think:
Oh. Me too.

You’ve been gone for a few years now and my heart still aches for you, for us that could’ve been if things were different. I don’t know why you keep going in and out of my life. Sometimes years pass. Sometimes it’s only months. Somehow we always seem to find our way back to each other just long enough to remind me why losing you hurt in the first place. I miss you and resent you in equal measure,…

Dear You, If you’re wondering how everything managed to go sideways after you genuinely did everything right, congratulations — you’ve unlocked one of life’s least discussed features. You showed up, tried your best, made the responsible choices, didn’t burn any bridges, and still somehow ended up standing in the middle of a mess wondering what…

Dear Mom, I understand that this letter might be meant for someone I no longer have contact with, but it feels the same. Unfortunately, I am writing this with tears in my eyes, and I wish they were tears of happiness, but they are not. I wish you understood me more and stood by my…

Hi dad, It’s been a few years since you’ve been gone and I never got the chance to tell you my side of the story. When you reached out to me, two years before you were gone, I didn’t want to talk to you. I had so much anger and resentment towards you for leaving…
